Is this the mansion I will live in?
Director - Rafaelle Fillastre Country - Belgium Time - 5:40 The safest LGBTQ+ countries in Europe' into Google, and Belgium pops up at the top. For many queers who are about to be forcedly displaced from their country of origin, this becomes a determinant in the decision-making of where to go. However, contrary to the internet portrayal, the reality for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Belgium often starts with discrimination and oppression, sometimes even more severe than what they had been experiencing before. This animated short tries to shed light on the incomprehension of queer identities within migration systems and the abuse of power by its frontline workers. It depicts only the first few hours of a lengthy, 18-24 months long asylum process, where queer asylum seekers are met with mistreatment, hunger, and homelessness instead of the promised equality and safe space. |
Check
Director - Anita Gill Country - United Kingdom Time - 1:25 A short film about OCD checking and the anxious inner struggle that can often be invisible to others. The aim of 'Check' is to convey this feeling of anxiety, urgency and frustration through beautiful, abstract visuals and looping, chaotic sounds. |
Poppy Flowers
Director - Evridiki Papaiakovou Country - Estonia Time - 4:24 Remembering is a fluid affair. A daughter tries to reconcile with her mother through memories of their shared rituals, exposing the intricate aspects of their relationship. As the daughter matures, she begins to contemplate conventional notions of divinity. The blank frames of the 35mm strip regain their function as memorabilia in the process of engraving her past onto its surface. |
Matta and Matto
Director - Bianca Caderas, Kerstin Zemp Country - Switzerland Time - 10:16 In a dystopian world where touch is forbidden, Matta and Matto offer refuge to the lonely at Hotel Vaip. In the deceptive labyrinth of mind bending rooms at their transient hotel, deepest desires are fulfilled and surpassed, but this comes at a price. |
